RI@Work: Lauren Bush

BS1_5100-Edit

I met Lauren Bush in her office in South County right inside the Goddard School’s front door. She had very specific times that we could meet – too early and she’d be handling the morning rush, too late and she’d be on to her mid-day tasks. She handles so many of the school’s day to day operations, her business card should be much bigger than it is. It was apparent that the many tasks she juggles over the course of the day is what she loves about the job. Most of all, though, she loves being so involved with the children at the school.

She says, “I have always enjoyed being around children!  I started as a mother’s helper and then progressed to full-fledged babysitting soon after.  As far as I can remember, people always said that I was great with kids and had a real knack for working with them.  How can you not have a smile on your face when you have so many friends and get to see them every day!!  It wasn’t until I was in college that I started working in a childcare center.  It was then that I realized that I wanted to be a part of the bigger picture and not in a class with just one group of children.”

On her many different hats as Director, Lauren says, “This position requires so much, but the most important thing is flexibility.  No two days are ever the same and you need to be ok with that.  There are so many hats that I wear, it just depends on which hats I will be wearing today!  Some days I am a plumber, a nurse, a custodian, a therapist, a coordinator, a photographer, a listening ear, an author; but every day I am a mom, a leader, and I am responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of 100+ children and teachers-which is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly. (I also wish I was an octopus!!)  You also have to realize that you aren’t going to get to everything on your “to-do” list in one day-so pick one major thing to tackle every day and sprinkle in some smaller items.  Everything will get done eventually!”

Even with everything she has on her plate, she is able to keep it in perspective, noting “This position is so fulfilling!  Where else can you go to work every day knowing that you are instilling a love of school and learning into each child?  I love seeing the children at every age and really enjoy visits from our graduates and hearing about all the fun things they are doing and learning in school!”

If Lauren wasn’t the Goddard School Director, she says that she knows she’d be doing something involving children in some way. Thank you, Lauren, for being part of the RI@Work project. Keep up the good work!

RI@Work: Erica Caligiuri

BS2_6752

Erica Caligiuri isn’t much taller than most of her students, but in the time I was in her classroom, I could tell she has (and had) a huge impact on her students. She was excited to tell me about the Stock Market game she uses as a math teaching tool. It leaves me wishing my teachers had done this game, I’d be much better at understanding the stock market! Her past students obviously appreciate her because twice in the short time that I was there, a group of past students took the time to stop by and check in. In addition to her day job, Erica is also a fashion blogger and works closely with the Providence fashion scene.

In her own words:
Every since I was a little girl I always wanted to be a teacher. I was that kid who always played teacher and at the end of the school year I would take home the extra dittos to play school with. When I was in sixth grade, my teacher was the best. She is one of the reasons I continued to pursue it. She was so supportive (my parents were getting divorced then and I can remember her pulling me aside and sitting with me and telling me her kids were going through the same thing and if I needed anything she’d be there). That moment was so profound. I’ve always loved working with kids. I started babysitting at the age of 12. I worked as a camp counselor and then became camp supervisor. I was a nanny for 9 years and loved it. Kids are my life.

I’ve been teaching for 11 years now. I taught special education for 6 years and I’ve been a sixth grade teacher for 5. I’ve always love the middle school kids. Young enough to still want your help and old enough to have real conversations. Its a tough age for kids and they really need guidance. I want to continue to be that person for some kids. There are days when I feel like I should be doing something else, more because of the political side and how people talk bad about teachers. But when my kids do something that make me so proud, that’s the reason why I stay.

If I wasn’t a teacher, I would love to be working in the fashion/beauty industry blogging. My dream job would be to blog for a major magazine. Being a Glambassador for Glamour magazine and Director of Operations for StyleWeek Northeast allows me to do this on my own but I would love for it to be a job someday. I would also love to finally get my children’s book published. I have been putting this off for years now and I need to just bite the bullet and do it. I’m also in the process of trying to get a travel product patented.

Being a teacher allows me to have all the loves in my life come true and I couldn’t ask for a better profession.”

Thanks, Erica – this was fun!
